The Good: Super bowl Ads I Can’t Wait To See!

Puppies, food and Mindy.  If you were to look into my brain at any given time you are 99% likely to find me thinking of one of the above-mentioned topics.   I know I know I’m so complex and intriguing and you wish you were more like me.

Puppies make everything in the world right, food tastes delicious and Mindy, well she just gets me and whenever I’m in a pickle I stop and think “What would Mindy do?” and sure enough I become un-pickled.   So this year when I went on my search to find what I think should be the most anticipated Super bowl ads, I quickly found my top three.  Puppies, food and Mindy, its like they made these ads just for me!

“Lost Dog” - Budweiser Puppy

I love puppies and kittens and basically anything that’s small cute and fluffy.  Last year when Budweiser came out with their “Puppy love” commercial I was thrilled, it was cute and did an excellent job at making the viewer feel emotion (check it out below).  Budweiser just released a heart-breaking teaser of the much-anticipated “Lost Dog” super bowl ad.   Oh the emotions!  His eyes, they break my heart!

"Invisible Mindy Kaling" – Nationwide

Mindy Kaling the star of The Mindy Project will be appearing in a commercial for the American insurance company, Nationwide.   Insurance is not fun stuff; its usually boring and the majority of people view it as a big rip off.   Needless to say it could definitely use the help of humour to freshen things up a bit.

“You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” – Snickers

All right I’ll admit I suffer from Hangriness syndrome aka I become a monster when I’m hungry.  So I can easily relate to every “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” commercials snickers has come out with.   This year’s commercial does not look like it will disappoint especially now that it features the hilarious Danny Trejo.

Be sure to check back next week! I will be reviewing the full commercials and telling you my favourite! Agree, disagree or have something to add? Leave a comment I would love to hear from you!

The Bad: Justin Bieber for Calvin Klein

Ok I’m going to be honest here I’ve never bought or worn men’s underwear but if I were to suddenly start doing so I think I’d be a boxer – brief kind of girl.  Don’t ask me why because I’m not entirely sure, I just feel like it would be the best of both worlds. All right enough about my underwear preferences, lets focus on Justin Biebers’!  Woohoo an excuse to research guys in underwear! By now I’m sure you’ve all heard about the photoshop scandal involving Justin and his recent campaign for Calvin Klein and if not I have happily provided you a before and after shot of the enhancing that happened below!

Now that you’ve seen it I’m sure you have an opinion on many items!  Well so do I!  Lets evaluate its effectiveness:

Is it effective? Why or Why not?

In some ways it’s effective but mostly negative.  The only thing going for this ad is that it has gotten a TON of press, though its mostly negative, people are talking about and Calvin Klein brand awareness levels are surely rising.

Does it stimulate a positive response?

NO.  While doing my research for this post the only positive responses were coming from beliebers (shotout to @Xoxxbiebersgurl- Hey Gurl Hey)!  Other than that there was a TON of negative responses for two reasons: Justin Bieber modeling men’s underwear and the large amount of Photoshop manipulation!

Does the target market view the offer favorably? Why?

When I think of Calvin Klein’s target market I think of stylish men and women in their late 20’s and 30’s.   But this ad is not for the typical Calvin Klein target market.  The purpose of this ad is to reach a new target market: pre teen/ teen girls, who thanks to Justin, will want their boyfriends to wear them and they’ll want to wear the women (or men’s, I’m not judging).  So yes their new target market view this offer favorably but for their existing target market not too much.

This was a risky move for Calvin Klein and I hope it pays off for them! Agree, disagree or have something to add? Leave a comment I would love to hear from you!

P.S. Check out this hilarious spoof SNL did of the campaign (I laughed so hard I cried, unfortunately it was in a very public place and as we all know I'm not a pretty crier).

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: I'm Back!

I am officially halfway done the Advertising and Marketing Communication Management Program at Sheridan College and I’m proud to say that I have yet to pull an all nighter, though I have come close (FYI cupcakes are great energy boosters).

Once again I have been given the task to create a blog, but this time I actually need to get more than one follower, so Mom (my only follower) could you please send this to your friends and even that one weird aunt who smells like donuts, Thanks!  Anyways according to the assignment I am to create content for, monitor and evaluate a blog’s web traffic and success based on a number of key measures.  Unlike my previous task I feel slightly more prepared and qualified to do this.

I’m going to continue with evaluating advertisements and cross my fingers that I don’t unintentionally insult or ruin a possible relationship with future employers (I swear I’m a good employee and will bring baked goods (gluten free or vegan upon request) in on a regular basis)! As well as evaluating ads I will talk about trends going on in the industry as well as advertisement fails.  Just a reminder as I evaluate each ad I will answer the following the questions:

  • Is it effective? Why or why not?
  • Does it stimulate a positive response?
  • Does the target market view the offer favourably? Why?

So once again I ask that you follow me on this journey through the good (the cupcake I’m eating right now, I really am eating one, its vanilla and has sprinkles), the bad (my humour), and the ugly (my grammar) of all things advertising!

Agree, disagree or have something to add? Leave a comment I would love to hear from you!
